The real question now remains is: why doensn't the installation process
of openSUSE not automatically recognise and adjust for this disparity?

Hmmm good question. It would be nice. I think I have to do a lot
more reading on this APIC thing and why it freaks out the kernel. It
was especially frustrating that 64bit would install without
complaining, yet 32bit would just lockup.
