Well, it isn't - I guess - "locked up". I can move the mouse, I just can't 
click or use the keyboard. In fact, I'm on the system now typing in KMail, 
having used VNC to remote into the machine. (It is locked on the screen.)

Closing and opening the laptop lid seems to do little other than "shrink" the 
screen so that it is narrow now.
