Charles, I don't know if the bug is in CUPS or hlip, the HP driver. But 
I DO know a work around. On your utilities menu is "Printing." Choose 
the HP option. You MAY have to do so as root. You'll have to "start" the 
printer in there.....done. You can also check ink levels, etc.
