Hello Tom,

I had a similar problem with HP tx1000 laptop.

When the screen goes to sleep, the X-server
must be started again..
..or alternative you can type ctrl+alt+F5 and (or?)  ctrl+alt+F7
(one of these starts the display mode again).  This did the
trick for me, so at least I dont have to start the x-server
(and log out) each time.  Hope this crappy solution
might help you. ;)

.. I still have a mysterious halting of the system
every now and then (that might well be because of the ***
nvidia driver).
