I don't think that could have happened, since Vi / Ex were derived from and included code from ed and hence were covered by AT&T copyright.

For what it's worth, he also wrote an article a few years back in Wired in which he expressed his fears that the combination of AI / robotics, nanotechnology and genetic engineering would lead to humanity's extinction, either outright through catastrophe or by conversion into a cyborg species.
