Hi. I had similar problems but now everything is working OK. See
comments inserted within your post. Gil

On Wed January 2 2008, Chee How Chua scratched these words onto a
coconut shell, hoping for an answer:
Hi,

I'm using openSUSE 10.3, kernel 2.6.22, Firefox 2.0.0.10, and
java-1_5_0-sun-1.5.0_update13-0.5

My setup is identical except that I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.11. All of
this was originally installed about a week ago, then reinstalled
yesterday. Therein lies the solution, I think.

I have a problem getting Java applets to run in my Firefox.

And I had the same problem. Drove me crazy in SuSE 10.0 for more than a
year, and also drove me crazy when I first installed 10.3 last week. I
could not run java applets in Firefox. For example, I could not do the
java speed tests on www.dslreports.com. I got a message telling me that
I was missing certain java elements necessary to display all items on
screen. Got a similar message on many other websites.

I went to the java website and downloaded the latest version of java JRE
and tried to install. Very frustrating. :o(

There is a symbolic link to the Java plugin for the Firefox browser
located in /usr/lib/browser-plugins/javaplugin.so
This links to /etc/alternatives/javaplugin which is a symbolic link
to
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update13-sr2/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/li
bjavaplugin_oji.so This plugin didn't work. Although about:plugins
show that the Java installation is working for Firefox, visiting
Java's page or any page with a Java applet does not work correctly.

I also found that the plugins did not work. I created links all over the
place. I also copied the libjavaplugin_oji.so into all sorts of places
within firefox. Nothing worked. Many hours of frustration.

So what I did was to create a link
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so to the same file as
above. about:plugins again showed that the plugin is installed. Once
again, I tried the applet in
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp but it is still not
working.

This applet now works for me. However, I am told that I do not have the
proper version of Java! I am told to download and install something
else. Like hell! No way I am going to take a chance screwing up this
working install. :o)

I've googled for help but the results came back with making a
symbolic link which I've already done.

Does anyone have any advice?

OK, this will probably really tick you off, but I suggest reinstalling
10.3. When I did this yesterday now all of a sudden those pages that I
could not see before display perfectly! All the java applets now work.

I cannot explain why this is happening other than to assume that when I
did the first install of 10.3 I failed to install some file, some
package that I did get yesterday.

One thing you should check: Be sure that you enable the Community
Repository named "Main Repository (NON-OSS). It's in the Yast Control
Center.

That repository has java updates. I suspect maybe I failed to get that
one the first time, but this time I did, and when I did the first
online update it may have pulled in a java update that now allows me to
see all those nice applets that eluded me for over a year.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
