Hi Sven,

it is a common failure of the boot loader. Lilo used to do that, and
grub has an error 18. I solved it by using the Install DVD and use the
option to boot an installed system, when it asks in the install process
if it is a new install or update, under "other options" if I can recall
correctly. When it is up and running, I reinstalled grub in the mbr. If
you have a windows dual boot, it will also be in the grub menu. Some
notebooks may have the problem, because of a setting in the bios. This
was so in the Thinkpad. See message #4 in this link:
