I am not able to figure out where the modem is mounted. Here is the
information I get with hwinfo:
53: USB 00.0: 0000 Unclassified device

UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_483_7554_noserial_if0

SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.0/usb1/1-1/1-1:1.0
SysFS BusID: 1-1:1.0
Hardware Class: unknown
Model: "SGS Thomson Microelectronics 56k SoftModem"
Hotplug: USB
Vendor: usb 0x0483 "SGS Thomson Microelectronics"
Device: usb 0x7554 "56k SoftModem"

Speed: 12 Mbps
Module Alias: "usb:v0483p7554d0210dc02dsc00dp00ic02isc80ipFF"
Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
Attached to: #57 (Hub)
As for the /var/log/messages the information I give is complete. These
are the last lines of messages file:
Dec 30 22:16:03 HPAthlon64 kernel: usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 2
Dec 30 22:18:49 HPAthlon64 kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device
using ohci_hcd and address 3
Dec 30 22:18:50 HPAthlon64 kernel: usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen
from 1 choice
Does it means that the modem is not mounted?

Yes, you have right, the usb modem is mounted on sdb-sde on my PC. None of them seems to respond when connecting using minicom. I am not
All those sdb-sde are disks, not the modem. You should expect something like "ttyUSB0"
Looking at /var/log/messages when connecting the modem I get the following lines:
Dec 28 21:32:25 HPAthlon64 kernel: usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 2 Dec 28 21:32:32 HPAthlon64 kernel: usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3 Dec 28 21:32:32 HPAthlon64 kernel: usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
That's incomplete. You should see something like:

Of course, yours would be different, the above is a very special kind. But the "usb-serial" keyword is important.
It seems to me that the modem is not recognized. However, as in Yast, hardware information, the modem is correctly detected. Any ideas?
What does exactly Yast say? Use the command "hwinfo --modem" as root on a console.
