Not necessarily. Vanilla kernels are available as RPMs through the
opensuse build service:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/Vanilla/
For instance, you'll be able to install the current Vanilla 2.6.24-rc6
using this repository. However, this service is available for SuSE 10.2
and 10.3 only.

Is information about vanilla kernels also available via a smart repository?
Just to see regularly what is brewing and if some time is available to try it
out?
