Yes, I agree that using repositories with anything less than an ADSL connection, is a real PITA.
I enjoy ADSL since last year, but it's slow for USA servers. For Portugal it can do 100 KB/s ~ 1Mb/s.
However... instead of using the download.opensuse.org redirector, you can use another repo that works faster for you. I think I remember reading about one on a portuguese usinversity, perhaps:
