1.2.4b-55 will not play back; it stutters and stalls
1.3.4-2 gives lots of tracing, including failures in pa_linux_alsa.c line
1066 and then fails to play, more error messages and the "Error while
opening sound device"
Yes, on a new install today 1.3.4-2 gave these messages - perhaps something
to
do with portaudio? As Carl said, this version was working earlier, so
something must have changed.
1.2.4, however, works OK for me.

The comments above are all on a 32bit laptop. The 64bit versions of
Audacity have a different collection of problems, which I may get to
later. I tried installing from sources but got the say problems (well
actually I had to disable FLAC before it would compile). This is a
real pain for me as it is messing the flow of my lectures. This
morning I reinstalled Portaudio, but that made no differences either.
