There are some deficiencies though. The lack of access control list
application is first in mind.

A very handy utility to create these kinds of encrypted volumes is
truecrypt. http://www.truecrypt.org/
It's for windows, but it's very nice and convenient.
That's not correct. Truecrypt has command line only version for Linux
(Creation of GUI for Linux is in developer's TDB list). I'm using it
both on Linux and Windows and it is very convenient. You can access
encrypted volume on any platform. E.g I have encrypted volume on USB
Disk On Key and I can mount it in Windows or in Linux.
It allows encryption of the whole partition or of the file, that
serves as "container" for encrypted volume.
