I run vmware workstation 5.5.5-56455 as well on a SuSE 10.3 host. I had to

Did you try with the free -as in beer- vmware server?
Not the server.

I did not try 10.3 with it yet, but it is much more frequently updated
and therefore way fresher than your vmware workstation 5.5 installation.
I use the 5.5 workstation, which I have purchased and keep rather
up-to-date. I currently run VMwareWorkstation-5.5.5-56455.

as far as I understood, the problem here is not that vmware runs on 10.3
(it definitely does).
I understood that the problem here is that suse 10.3 does not run inside
a vmware installation, neither on vmware 5.5 nor on vmware server 1.04
(the latter just tested very rudimentarily).

Kind regards
Eberhard
