...It seems that you sent output to console instead to file:
rpm2cpio file.rpm > file.cpio
should work.

Well don't I feel foolish. It had been a while since I used
rpm2cpio. :-)
Everyone has his share of publicly expressed blind spots, so I would not be
upset. I would call it "Welcome to the company" event.
BTW, for what that command does you might be better off with Midnight
Commander. See:
