That's where the penny dropped - you might have heard it!! I've checked my SASL set up and found that it was not authenticating - I found a bogus character in the smtpd.conf file. Now that this character has been removed, SASL Authentication seems to be working and I have sent an email from my phone to an external recipient - objective achieved.
