hi all,
I recently upgraded to KDE 3.5.7 using smart which retrieves the packages from PackMan's repository. The upgrade was just fine and this new version seems to be performing slightly better than 3.5.5.
Anyway, I've noticed that on both systems (now 2 GB RAM and 2 GB swap each), at home and at work, the use of the swap space slowly increases faster than with 3.5.5. It can reach 100% within 1 week. So the only way to free up that allocated space is to reboot the system, which in some cases isn't a good idea, but that's the only solution as it becomes unusable (too slow and unresponsive, etc)
Has anyone out there noticed these symptoms as well? if so, what do you do to solve/workaround them?
Cheers, Martin
I run 2 KDE sessions at home usually for much longer than week, and never had this problem. I would guess something else (beagle?) uses the memory. Check with top which process consumes so much memory. Usually 2G RAM are more than enough for standard workstation operation. My work PC has 3G, runs 10.2 and windows in a VM (the VM is set to get 1G), and I never see more than 1.5G used. Now, if you really think it's KDE problem, you can just logout - login without restarting the machine. This will restart kde and X. If the memory is still occupied, the problem is somewhere else. Or, to be sure you have killed kde and X - hit ctrl-alt-Backspace. Keep in mind that this kills X and all open programs, so you may loose data i f you haven't save it. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
