I would start as follows:
1. open up a terminal (ex konsole), get root and type (without quotes) "tail -f /var/log/messages"
You should use tailf instead of tail -f.
2. insert your PCMCIA modem and look what is showing up in /var/log/messages .
3. Proceed from there
