I don't know how to tell if I'm "using the Novell version from the DVD/CDs".
rpm -qi OpenOffice_org
Currently I have openoffice 2.0.4-38.5 installed, altho YaST2 displays this information in a strange way (it also shows three different versions of 2.0.4-38 being checked in the Product column and highlighted in gray -- no clue what that means).
-38 was the released version, -38.5 was a security updated version.
To clean this up, you could try removing all of OpenOffice (using YAST), and then installing the latest version - that way you can hopefully end with a single version. Your config etc will remain in your /home so you should not loose anything.
Since he used the rpm version, no need to uninstall first (i.e rpm -V OpenOffice_org will verify the rpm files). He could also add the build repository for OpenOffice Stable to get a newer version via Yast.
