[opensuse] missing device icons in KDE

Hi, using KDE 3.5.7 release 52.1 on pretty fresh opensuse 10.2. Even
if I enable the display of the device icons on the desktop (Configure
desktop settings/Behavior/Device Icons) and selecting all of the
choices there, no device icons appear on the desktop, not a single
one. Restarting the session after the change did not help either.
Any ideas where/what to check?
