The Windows installer is written to take over and replace the MBR
entirely, only recognizing the existence of Windows installations.
The Linux installer (SuSE's, anyway) will integrate existing boot
information into the MBR it writes, giving you the option to boot any
of the systems that existed before it was installed in addition to the
newly installed system.
