If you can get it to work with sane then there is a network access daemon (saned) that will work with Linux. This can be setup via YaST. Unfortunately I do not know whether this will work with windows clients.
Well, there will be no Windows clients in the set up once we're done upgrading the operating systems from XP. This will eventually be a complete SUSE home network. It looks like (unless I've missed something) that the network capable printer/scanner can only work as a network printer (this is easily supported in SUSE suing the Linux driver from Canon). The network scanning is out (even with Canon's Linux scanner driver.. this driver only does USB). We will have to rearrange the office so that the Canon printer/scanner is near one of the computers, and connect it to the USB port of that computer... and try network scanning that way (using saned).
