The --preserve option of cp (along with the -d and -R) using value "all" 
plus the --attributes option will include extended attributes options 
and allow 100% faithful duplication.

Cp can also create sparse files, in circumstances when that might 
matter:

 --sparse=WHEN
 control creation of sparse files
