Your suggestion prompted me to find another external case (identical to
the first one). It worked perfectly on 10.2!
So there is probably a marginally adequate power supply in the hotpswap
mechanism in the case. Seems strange that it worked with one version of
the operating system and not with another.
I would still like to know how/where all this stuff gets configured
(hal?, udev?, ? . 10.2 does not seem to use hotplug scripts anymore).
