Why didn't you just install 10.2? It would seem like a good thing to do,
to stay on top of things, rather than go through all that to install an
out of date option.

Another thing that I've found if you can boot from a CD but not read it is
in a couple of my dual CD systems. And using the other CD drive (or even moving
it after boot) will often fix the problem.
