Figured out the problem. I'm missing this line in the config file:
STARTMODE='onboot'
Wonder why I didn't see this before. I'm new to SuSE (most experience
is with RedHat flavor which uses ONBOOT instead.

Probably the easiest way is to put the module in the list of modules
the kernel should load at boot time, somewhere in /etc/sysconfig/kernel
I think.
