Well, I think the trick was the cups reset.  Something seems to have hung up, 
somewhere.  It also didn't help that I changed the physical printer to 
another of the same kind, with an obviously different serial number.
And a certain amount of black magic--iow, I got lucky.  Something is wrong
with the color rendition, but black comes out black, so that will do for a 
while.  

I still don't know how to get the LaserJet to print.  Someone suggested 
setting it up as a different type (LJ4, for example) but I don't know how to 
make SuSE forget that I installed it as a 2200D.  

So thank you for all the folks that tried to help, and some of you did.
There are obviously a bunch of things I still don't understand, like why I got 
a "permission denied" on cupsd.conf from root.
