Hi all,
I'm new to this list and also new to OpenSuse. I've installed 10.2 on my system and it worked fine for almost 2 weeks. Since today I can't login with the normal username/password in KDE. Root login is possible.
When login in, the screen turns to black for a few seconds and I'm going back to the login screen. Creating a new user from the root login doesn't change anything. The new user has the same problem. If the previous 2 posts don't help, let's go to the command line. From the GUI, use ctrl-alt F1 (of f2-f6) to get a command line. Enter your user name and password. If you are able to log in, the problem is related to the GUI. If you are NOT able to log in, then log in to the root account and set a new password for your username: <your host name>:~ # passwd <your user name> Changing password for <your user name>. New Password: Reenter New Password: Password changed. <your host name>:~ #
Then try to log in as yourself again. Remember, F1 through f6 are
virtual terminals. You can use the alt to to go to another one if you
want to.
To return to the GUI session manager, then use ctrl-alt F7.
Since you are new to SuSE and I'm not sure if you are new to Linux:
ctrl-alt backspace -- kill current session and display manager.
ctrl-alt-esc - This gives you a skull and crossbones to kill any
application that has an open window.
Once you are back into the Session Manager (login screen), do a
crrl-alt-backspace to restart the GUI.
If you are still unable to log in, let us know what your Display
Manager is (should be either KDM if you are using KDE or GDM if you are
using GNOME, but there are a few others. And, let us who what Windows
manager you are using.
