... you are talking now about keeping apps in user space up-to-date (worthwhile endeavor) and he is talking about your original FUD that running a back-level version (linux kernel) was risky. That not only is FUD, its ridiculous. You can run Suse 9.3 all day long every day for the next ten years without a single problem... and that is not to say that you will not need to update Firefox. Firefox may have vulnerabilities that a sensible user will patch--- and that have absolutely nothing to do with your first claim about back-level Suse versions.
