[opensuse] konqueror ftp problem

When dragging files down from my remote webserver to a backup directory on my
desktop konq tells me that the file I'm attempting to replace is newer than
the one on the server when it in fact isn't. FireFTP seems to do a better job
but doesn't inspire confidence as not all modified files get changed. gftp
segfaults randomly beyond repair.
Can ftp be used like this to sync two versions one local and one remote? Any
advice? I can't use rsync or ssh to the remote server.
