Check the /var/log/X<whatever> log file. See if any mention of your
mode line shows up at all, perhaps with a reason why it was
rejected. I know when fedora went to xorg 7.1 I discovered that
many mystic incantations and shaking of rubber chickens was required
to convince it "yes, I really do want you to use my modeline".
