Hi Roberto,
Thanks for the response!
This time with telnet, I got a display problem. Please see below for
details:
==== Step 1 ===
liu@linux:~> telnet sgi1

zhan009 1% xterm
Error: Can't open display: linux.site:0
===================
Since SGI doesn't know what is "linux.site", I did the following:
1). set the DISPLAY variable to my ip address in SGI console
2). type "xhost +" in my SUSE linux console
3). turn off firewall through yast2
Then re-type "xterm" again, but still get the following message,
===== Step 2 ======
zhan009 2% setenv DISPLAY 172.21.243.17:0.0
zhan009 3% xterm
Error: Can't open display: 172.21.243.17:0.0

Could you please diagnose this for me? Thank you for your patiences!
Best Regards!

One other thing to try. Use telnet instead of ssh to see if ssh is interfering...

My OS is SUSE 10.0, not 9. I opened the yast for the graphics card, and found the "Activate 3D acceleration" is marked but grey and un-changeable. Then I typed the command as you suggested: liu@linux:~> xdpyinfo | egrep GLX GLX SGI-GLX
I also can run 3D game like TuxRacer smoothly, which was very slow before I installed the ATI driver.
Do all the information above indicate the OpenGL X-extension is loaded on my machine? Any other suggesions?
Thank you!

I don;t have sles9, but go through yast and bring up the graphics card and make sure "Activate 3D Acceleration" is on.... Also another way to verify is like so:
xdpyinfo | egrep GLX
GLX SGI-GLX
You should see GLX....
Good Luck...
