I totally forgot, since Audacity uses portaudio: for output, you will need to install v19 and recompile Audacity. v18 only support OSS.
the PackMan-RPM use portaudio19 and it works fine with alsa on my X86_64.
Portaudio is the way to go. Using ALSA causes too many Xrun problems and limits the number of input/output ports. Portaudio gives my consumser based Audigy 1 16 in/out, and latency is down to 20 msec (not bad for an Audigy). If your good with configuring kernels and setting up boot options for multiple kernel options you might also want to try the SUSE-JACKLab projects. They have compiled a fairly stable preemptive kernel (very low latency kernel) that will give more robust response (got the Audigy down to less than 5 msec latency). Unfortunately, for myself. The SUSE Jacklab kernel and the ATI drivers don't play well together (but then the ATI drivers don't play well with many others as well :( ). Eitherway, go to the Packman site and grab the Portaudio packages (or set it up in YaST as and installation source). Also, as a side note - Audacity 2 (beta) is much improved (but still beta) and I was surprised to find the "qtrackor" works very well (simple but effective).
