about the MS/Novell deal: "we didn't get stupid overnight".
They already are poor as we started with publishing ISOs right at the release time and we expected this.
I am not really trying to insult Novell but it is difficult to not wonder if they are really thinking well about marketing and human nature. No, I don't have any degree in either and am not an expert but I still can make observations. SuSE's easy availability and good price was one thing that got me started with SuSE 6.2. It is very unlikely I would have bothered to checkout an unknown by mail order (unless I can find "Das schöne Mädchen von Seite Eins").
It may very well be as another has stated that the USA is a small market for Linux but I still believe that is is those few home users who eventually push for it in the work places. That may actually be FUD. Remember, most Linux users are counted as MS customers. Since it's still difficult to get a box w/ linux anything
On Wed December 13 2006 5:51 am, Damon Register scratched these words onto a coconut shell, hoping for an answer: pre-installed , we get counted as being in the *other* OS camp. It absolutely doesn't occur to some companies that there are folks who actually reformat the DS as soon as it gets home/office etc and install any version of linux. Mind you some companies insist you reinstall whatever was on the box when you bought it before they will even discuss hardware probs.! They do that even if what you installed was a later version of MS Windows ! My kid got a computer from Compaq IIRC that had 98 on it.. they needed W2k for school.. but when there were any probs, they couldn't get any help at all until they reinstalled 98 on the thing. you can be that company is off my list for any purchase of anything computer related. Bit shortsighted as well, after all MS *does* sell their OS in boxes, that were likely as expensive to make up as the ad campaign they launch to attempt to create a buzz among the press folks. That way, they feeling is, any *Company* w/ an intelligent IT dept will immediately upgrade all the boxes in the office. After all, it was only by getting people to take WIndows home w/ them from the office , that got them the market share they now have. Folks just wanted to be able to do email etc. "just the way it was at work".. They now believe the inroads Linux is making in the home market , just *might* get them some foothold on the office desktop. or words to that effect anyway. ;) -- j ..Every morning is the dawn of a new error... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
