I'm afraid I don't know anything about your specific problem, but have
you tried Ctrl-Alt-F2 (to get to a virtual console), followed by
Ctrl-Alt-Del? That should cause a safe shutdown.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about your specific problem, but have
you tried Ctrl-Alt-F2 (to get to a virtual console), followed by
Ctrl-Alt-Del? That should cause a safe shutdown.
