Unable to boot after fresh install, can boot from installation media, SLES8.

G'day,
I have a problem where a new SLES8 installation fails to boot and hangs
just prior to either the grub boot loader prompt, during the prompt or at
the Grub loading stage 2 prompt.
I did initially manage to install the O/S and run YOU all without fault
however I decided to reboot before installing the required app' and this is
when the problem first appeared.
I am trying to install SLES8 on an HP DL380 with a SMART Array Controller.
I have since blown away and reconfigured the array controller configuration
several times, including after a firmware upgrade. I have performed several
clean installations of SLES8 and have still not been able to boot normally.
As I use the array controller I have found that I have to use the SP4 CD to
start the installation to see the disks and I can easily boot to the
installed O/S using the same media.
We have another server of identical hardware running SLES 8 in a full
production capacity without fault.
I have searched forums, knowledge bases, etc and have not found anything
that has provided a remedy.
