I used YaST to do the job, however I did somethings manually:

Once the repo was added I opened YaST package manager, clicked in the
"update if newer version is available" and deleted the old X.Org
6.9packages that where there since there were not needed anymore, and
selected
to install the new versions of X.Org 7.1 (remember that X.Org >= 7.0 is
splitted in several packages) that where not selected automatically (wich
were quite some), among the new versions you will find:

Mesa, libdrm, sax2, xterm, and a bunch of xorg-x11-something packages

Once all the rignt packages are selected and installed, reboot your computer
and run sax2 to generate a new xorg.conf file with the new paths, restart
the graphics system and you are ready to go.

Maybe smart will be able to figure out the dependencies for itself once the
X.Org is updated and the old packages selected for removal, but I don't use
smart, so I don't know what may or may not happen... Anyway thats what I
did, hope it helps.
