I've been waiting for the colour to fade before selecting the final 
shutdown stage- but it doesn't always help and the system freezes :-( . 
And I do use the 877x nVidia driver. So what you say about the problem 
not necessarily being with the nVidia driver is a strong possibility and 
nobody would have known until you mentioned your own experience :-) . 
Every bit helps when solving "mysterious" problems :-) .
