I went back into the BIOS and verified that the (single) hard drive was
detected. Made no difference at all.

Here, in more detail, is what I tried and what the results were:

1. I loaded the 10.0 distribution DVD, went to
Installation/UPdate/Other/Expert Repair.

2. I went to the Partition Tool and saw the listing of the partitions, but
with no mount points.

3. I refreshed the listing and got mount points for the Windows partitions and
for swap, but not for root.

4. I clicked Finish and got the message "Yast2 needs a root partition to
install. Assign the root mount point to a partition."

5. I went back to the partition list, attempted to edit hda7 (the intended
root partition), but the mount point info was greyed out so I couldn't edit
it.

6. I backed out of the partitioner and went to "Install New Boot Loader". It
indicated that I had installation errors. I chose Finish and was told that
the errors had been repaired, but another call to the boot loader showed
errors again.

7. I rebooted and went to the rescue system. I mounted my intended root
partition, then did a chroot to it followed by mount -a.

8. I went into Yast and again chose the boot loader. This time I got the
message "Because of the partitioning, the boot loader cannot be installed
properly." No further explanation of what might be wrong with the
partitioning.

9. I went to the partitioner and discovered that it showed no partitions.

10. I exited Yast and used cfdisk to look at the partitions. They were all
there.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Paul
