Fixing menu.lst will fix the problem but the entries have to match your
system. If booting from the grub prompt with "root (hd0,7)" or "root
(hd0,6)" as your starting point for where grub should look for images
doesn't provide a viable bootable image, then certainly adding those
same entries to menu.lst will not result in a change.
what is the output of "ll /boot" and "ls /boot/grub" ?
