can not install any software now

Well, it appears I can't install anymore software. I just now tried to
install gcc. I get the message:
patch:glibc-1678.noarch has missing dependencies
There are no alternative installed providers of glibc-devel == 2.4.31 for patch:glibc-1678-0.noarch
conflict resolution
keep glibc-devel
delete glibc
ignore this requirement just here
If I choose to keep glibc-devel, it says:
This would invalidate atom:glibc-devel...
So it appears that glibc was updated but now I can't locate a compatible glibc-devel.
I guess this all gets back to the issue that I can't add any new installation sources.
This is really getting to be a pain in the ....
