Carlos, My first thought, from your testings so far, would seem to indicate a faulty DVD burner.
I'm starting to think that too :-(
Have you checked to see if there was a new firmware update for this unit?
I know there is, but as it didn't affect me previously, I didn't bother.
When was the last time you were able to burn a DVD?
About July, when I made a full backup to install 10.1.
Can you read a DVD disc from beginning to end without problems?
Yep. And I can burn CDs (not dvds)
Can you view a dual-layer DVD without problems?
Yep. The one from SuSE 9.3. Only one faulty package.
Have you checked your settings in K3b or tried changing any of them concerning the drive to see what effect that has?
Yes.
Have you tried burning from the shell, rather than K3b?
Yes, that's what I first did, using growisofs. I turned to k3b later.
I doubt it will make a difference, just a thought. Have you tried another DVD drive to test your setup?
That's my only one writer, unfortunately. This is at home.
Have you checked the cable from the mobo to the drive.
I will do that tonight, when I power off. I have a kernel update with reboot pending just now.
Any bios changes on the mobo recently that might affect the system seeing it as a dvd drive?
No, no bios changes that I can remember. I upgraded from 512 Mb to 1 Gb, but that was before the last successful burn, I think - yes, sure, just found the receipt: March.
Hopefully one of those questions will help lead you to something. What make & model drive is it?
LG 16X Super Multi DVD Rewriter, GSA-4160B
I will try windoze tonight. If all fails, I'll have to start shopping again. Do you know of a good model?
Thanks for your points.
