The hardware was detected properly during the install. However, I only can get the equivalent of a 19-inch view area out of it. There is a 1-inch black border on the left and right, and a half-inch black border on the top and bottom of the display.
I upgraded this system from Mandrake 9, where the display worked properly.

I tried installing a driver from Matrox, but it had no effect.

Go Yast Control Centre/Hardware/Gaphics Card and Monitor/Display 1->Monitor->Change/Display Size and check that the size of the monitor *is* 21 inch. Mine is a 19" but this setting was at 17" which gave me a similar result to what you are getting on the 21". Also, are you sure that your monitor was correctly detected? Are the frequencies correct? If not, select VESA as the monitor and then the resolution you want with the appropriate HZ refresh rate (eg, 60Hz or 72 or 75 etc.) and leave the frequencies at the default settings for what you have just chosen.
