They did. I have seen quite some PCs using rechargeable batteries for that
task; but the typical PCB soldered NiCd has a limited self life before
corroding quite similar to a watch battery... which is cheaper, easier to
replace, and does not leak easily. Out goes rechargeables, not good for
this use.

I would perhaps use a 1F capacitor - unless you power off your computer
for long periods; I can't define "long", I have never tried it personally,
they are not cheap.
