I just counted over 25,000 email messages on my home system. All the emails
are in MH format (I used exmh a number of years ago). My email client is
sylpheed-claws. It is relatively stable. My email is kept in hierachial
folders, and although I subscribe to a number of email lists, like this, I
generally do not save the emails since I can always go to the archives. I
use procmail recipes to filter emails into various folders leaving the
inbox open for a small number of emails and unlearned SPAM. I run postfix
as my MTA with port 25 open in my firewall. I also use fetchmail to grab
email from my ISP. While I have had some crashes with sylpheed-claws, it
has held up very well in contrast to KMail that I use at work, although I
do find KMail to be excellent also. One caveat about sylpheed-claws is that
it does not have the capability to create html. It can read html emails
using either dillo or gtk2 plugins. I generally build from sources, but
RPMs are available. Additionally, claws has the ability to add actions,
which can be simple scripts. It is a good light-weight client for both
Linux and Windows and uses the GTK2 libraries.
