Hello,
I did an update on 10.1 with Smart yesterday, Sunday, several of the updates were to do with the Zen Updater, libzyp, etc.
If you successfully used smart to do the update then why go backwards and try and use zen/zmd? Stay with smart.
On rebooting the PC and logging in I get an error message about needing superuser permissions to run Zen Updater. Upon closing this message the tray icon disappears as well. This happens on any user.
I think what you need to do when you get that opening message to input the root's password is to ignore this request. By doing this, when you click on the zmd icon in the system tray you will *then* be asked for the root's password in order to do an update. You should be able to go Start/System/Configuration and click on the Update Software icon to get the icon in the system tray back.
