I have an experience that may or may not be related. If my laptop is plugged
in to power, the screen saver works. It I unplug for even 30s and then plug
it back in to power, the screen saver no longer comes on. Instead, the
screen just goes blank. The only way to make the screen saver work again is
to shut down and restart while still plugged in to power.
