I'm not sure that this is a good idea. Just ask the server, it should be much more responsive.
It would even be OK if it only were a "half-good" idea. As Robert states, "Generate the list you would get from http://drpmsync.opensuse.org:8888/Factory/drpmsync/contents (maybe compressed) during the repository build process (like INDEX.gz). If this was done I could easily change my client to run as a drpmsync client _without_ the need of a drpmsync server at all." I really cannot see why this should not be done. If you are thinking "not necessary" try to see it as a "very much welcomed addition". Besides the "responsiveness" aspect there also is the "bandwidth" aspect.
