Well, this wont bring you any joy, but I can tell you we have 4 ( Suse
inside ) boxes here updated via YOU to Firefox 1.5.0.4 and none of
them shows that behaviour.
Or, perhaps it is clearer to say, they all behave as they have done
since Firefox got to be the choice many of us settled on some ( frmp
frmp) years ago. One thing you might look at, do you have any updates
or extensions.. sometimes it seems to take an amazingly long time to
tell you it hasn't found any new updates.

Oh sorry, if it were doing that sort of checking it would be in online
mode when you start Firefox up. ( maybe you can set it somewhere I
really don't recall )
