I am trying to be patient with the issues of online updates, and I have been able to make the 'test' version work -- mostly. But there are inconsistencies between the YOU-type update and the zen-updater.
After the 'test' rpms were installed as per instructions (I may have rebooted afterwards also, but I don't remember) I saw an orange update icon, clicked it, and got a list of updates. Several seemed odd, as there were rpms for both i586 and noarch. Being suspicious, I went to the YaST Online Update. The list looked much more normal, and I did the updates. When that was done, I still had an orange icon. I rebooted. Still an orange icon. I clicked it and the list that came up showed 'dhcp noarch'. I tried to install it, but got a 'failed' message. The YaST Online Update did not show it. Such an rpm is also not actually on the update ftp site. A day later, I still have an orange icon.
The patches (patch information files) are "noarch".
I later switched from user root to myself. An orange icon shows for me. I clicked it and waited a long, long, long time for a response, while the disk showed lots of activity. (What is it doing and where is the information going?) Finally, the dhcp noarch came up. If I continue I am finally told (after all of this time) that I do not have permission to do so. (That makes sense, but why not tell me earlier?)
The time spent is on refreshing / syncing the ZMD db. Here caching would really help. dhcp - known problem. permissions? should be fine...
One problem with the YOU approach. As someone pointed out earlier, we used to get a list of update servers to choose from. No more. Yes, one can go through the Installation Source module, but that involves very long waits. Having a easy-to-use list is important in case a server is slow or not behaving well for some reason. The feature should be restored.
This is nagging me too, we will hopefully fix with a DNS redirector or a different method.
