[SLE] mplayer compile

trying to compile mplayer in suse halts with "invalid gcc version" error.
ignoring the version also fails. has anyone downgraded gcc or c++ to
accomodate an mplayer build ? how big of a hassle is it? any work-arounds?
Yes, i do know about packman and the mplayer rpms, but i would like to play
with some late releases.
